Fine cacao from Upala, Northern region of Costa Rica
Pioneering Ethical Cacao Production
Nestled in the lush tropical landscape of Upala, in northern Costa Rica, Baby Sloth Fine Cacao is a groundbreaking cacao processing station dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of cacao production while uplifting local farming communities. The story of Baby Sloth began with the shared vision of three agronomists, whose deep love for cacao and commitment to sustainable agriculture led them to establish this unique initiative. With a mission to revolutionize the way cacao is grown, processed, and traded in the region, Baby Sloth has become a beacon of innovation and fairness in the local cacao industry.

The cacao grown in Upala has long been considered a heritage product, a sacred crop deeply intertwined with the traditions of the region's indigenous communities. For generations, the people of northern Costa Rica have cultivated cacao with great reverence, honoring its spiritual and cultural significance. Baby Sloth embraces this rich history, working closely with local producers to ensure that the ancient traditions of cacao farming are respected and preserved, even as they introduce modern techniques to enhance production quality.

In Upala, cacao farming has traditionally been an informal practice, with many small-scale producers struggling to earn a fair income from their labor. Recognizing this challenge, Baby Sloth Fine Cacao is on a mission to formalize the cacao trade, ensuring that local farmers are fairly compensated for their work.

IMPACT
By partnering with over 50 producers, Baby Sloth offers training programs to improve production techniques, empowering farmers with the knowledge they need to increase yields and improve the quality of their crops.
One of Baby Sloth's most impactful initiatives has been opening bank accounts for its partner producers. In an industry where transactions are often conducted in cash, this formalization not only ensures greater financial security for the farmers but also helps them access crucial services such as credit and loans. The company has also facilitated access to funding, allowing producers to expand and improve their farms, which further strengthens the local cacao economy.
